Counseling for Anxiety
Is anxiety taking over your life? Does it feel like you can’t control it no matter how hard you try? Have you already tried therapy but found it ineffective?
Types of Anxiety I Treat
Anxiety isn’t one thing. In my practice I work with generalized anxiety (the constant, free-floating worry), panic attacks and panic disorder, social anxiety, specific phobias, and health anxiety — as well as the anxious, on-edge feeling that can linger after difficult or traumatic experiences.
Common Symptoms of Anxiety
- Racing thoughts you can’t switch off, especially at night
- A sense of dread or impending doom without a clear cause
- Restlessness, irritability, or feeling constantly “on edge”
- Physical symptoms: racing heart, tight chest, stomach trouble, muscle tension, headaches
- Avoiding situations, places, or people because of fear or worry
- Difficulty concentrating or feeling like your mind goes blank
- Sleep problems — trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
If anxiety is running your schedule instead of the other way around, it’s worth addressing.
If this sounds like you, I’m confident I can help. My practice offers the most effective forms of treatment, to get the relief from anxiety that you deserve.
When it comes to treating anxiety disorders, research shows that therapy is usually the most effective option. That’s because anxiety therapy – as opposed to anxiety medication – treats more than just symptoms to the problem.
Often, these are the symptoms of anxiety:
- Nervousness, restlessness or being tense
- Feelings of danger, panic or dread
- Rapid breathing or hyperventilation
- Increased or heavy sweating
- Trembling or muscle twitching
- Weakness or lethargy
- Difficulty focusing or thinking clearly about anything other than the thing you’re worried about
- Insomnia
- Obsessions about certain ideas, a sign of obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Anxiety surrounding a particular life event or experience that has occurred in the past, a sign of post-traumatic stress disorder
Therapy can help to uncover the underlying causes of your worries and fears, learn how to relax, look at situations in a new, less frightening way, and develop better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.
How I Treat Anxiety
Effective anxiety treatment isn’t just talking about your worries — it’s retraining how your mind and body respond to them. Depending on your situation, we may use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify and rework the thought patterns fueling your anxiety, exposure-based work to gradually reduce avoidance and fear, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you stop wrestling with anxious thoughts and start living around them.
When anxiety is tied to a distressing or traumatic experience, EMDR can be a powerful addition. You can read more about it on my EMDR Therapy in Frisco, TX page.
For some clients, especially when anxiety is connected to distressing or traumatic experiences, EMDR therapy may be another approach worth exploring.
What Do Sessions Look Like?
Early sessions focus on understanding your anxiety — when it shows up, what triggers it, and how it’s affecting your life. From there, we build a practical plan: skills you can use between sessions, plus in-session work on the deeper patterns keeping anxiety in charge.
Sessions are 53 minutes, and most clients start meeting weekly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can therapy really help with anxiety, or do I just need medication?
Research consistently shows therapy is one of the most effective treatments for anxiety — often more effective long-term than medication alone, because it addresses the root patterns rather than just the symptoms. Some clients do best with both, and I can help you weigh that decision.
I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work. Why would this be different?
General talk therapy doesn’t always target anxiety directly. The approaches I use — CBT, exposure work, ACT — are specifically designed for anxiety and have strong evidence behind them. The right method, with the right fit, matters.
How quickly will I feel better?
Many clients notice improvement in the first couple of months as they learn and practice new skills. The deeper patterns take longer to shift, and we’ll track your progress together along the way.
Do you offer in-person or virtual sessions?
I offer both in-person sessions in Frisco and virtual sessions.
